Belfast Zoo is delighted to partner with charity Friends of the Zoo in creating The William Brown Award. Friends of the Zoo was formed in 1997 by a group of community volunteers with a shared love for the zoo. William Brown was a longstanding member of the Friends of the Zoo who had a passion for both education and conservation.

To honour William, Friends of the Zoo are offering schools the chance to take action to protect a chosen species or habitat: this could be anything from planting wildflowers for bees, cleaning up a polluted habitat or joining a local red squirrel group. Local and global wildlife is increasingly under threat. It is our responsibility to play an active and vital conservation role to ensure the future survival of species and habitats.

And there are two prizes up for grabs!

  • £250 for the winner
  • £100 as a runner-up prize

The award is suitable for schools with children and young people aged between 8 and 16.

How to enter

  1. Choose an aspect of local native wildlife: this could be a single animal species you are particularly fascinated by; a local habitat you love exploring; a species of tree or other plant that appeals to you.
  2. Tell us what you know and have discovered about your choice chiefly regarding its conservation status. This can be done through posters, drawings, paintings, videos, or a short piece of writing of 100 – 500 words.
  3. Let us know what actions you have taken to protect your chosen species/habitat: this could be anything from planting wildflowers for bees and bats, cleaning up a polluted habitat, to joining a local red squirrel group.
  4. Let as many people know what you have found out and done to help native wildlife and encourage others to do the same. Communication could be done through a school assembly, local press, social media, or any other way. It will be up to you.
