Belfast hotel The Malone named among UK’s ‘Best New Hotels’ for 2026 ahead of multi-million pound reopening

South Belfast’s historic Malone Lodge Hotel is entering a bold new chapter. Following an 18-month, multi-million pound investment, the Macklin family has announced the official rebrand and total transformation of the property. Currently closed to the public to complete the final phase of works, the hotel will officially reopen in early February 2026 as The Malone, a high-end luxury boutique destination.

The extensive redevelopment has reimagined the 103-bedroom Victorian townhouse into a four-star boutique hotel that blends its 19th-century architectural charm with sleek, contemporary interiors. The transformation has already garnered national acclaim, with The Times recently naming The Malone as one of the ’24 best new hotels in the UK for the year ahead.’ Beyond the physical transformation, the project is a major boost for the local economy. A significant recruitment drive is currently underway to fill key leadership and hospitality roles, ensuring the service matches the hotel’s new luxury status. The project has created up to 20 new jobs and supported a wide range of local suppliers, providing a boost to the Queen’s Quarter.

“The Malone, which has already undergone multiple transformations, has been part of south Belfast for 35 years, and this feels like our most exciting chapter yet,” said Gareth Macklin, Director of The Malone.

“Our new name reflects our identity: a sophisticated, contemporary boutique experience that honours the property’s history. To be the only hotel in Northern Ireland named among the UK’s ‘Best New Hotels’ for 2026 by The Times is a testament to the hard work that has gone into our reopening. This redevelopment is not just about the building – it’s about our guests, our staff, and the community we serve. We can’t wait to welcome everyone to see what we’ve created.”

The transformation extends across the property, including redesigned guest rooms, the Greyhound Bar, Gallery restaurant, Lounge and Reception lobby, introduces several signature design touches, from panoramic suites to art installations celebrating Belfast’s heritage. The hotel has partnered with Focus Hotels to ensure service levels match the elevated surroundings.

Sustainability has also been considered, with energy-efficient systems and eco-conscious materials incorporated throughout the redevelopment.

The Malone’s story dates back to 1945 when it first opened as The Bowness Hotel. Since the Macklin family took ownership, it has been a cornerstone of the city’s hospitality scene and the heart of the community in south Belfast. The rebrand and investment aim to position The Malone as one of Belfast’s leading luxury boutique destinations, appealing to both local and international visitors.

The hotel will host a grand opening, welcoming local dignitaries, hospitality and business leaders to explore the new spaces.
