On the 10th anniversary year of the famous re-naming of Belfast City Airport, local artist Paul Wilson has kindly donated a piece of art depicting George Best in his prime.

Belfast artist Paul Wilson donated ‘Archangel’ to the airport, a digital print on canvas which is a copy of a piece Paul painted a few years ago.

The piece has already been a talking point around the terminal, and was officially ‘unveiled’ by Sammy Douglas MLA and Brian Ambrose, Chief Executive at George Best Belfast City Airport.

Brian Ambrose, Chief Executive of George Best Belfast City Airport said:

“We were delighted when Paul approached us about donating the print to the airport.

“George Best was an inspiration to so many and we are proud to have him recognised both inside and outside the airport.

“So many passengers have already made comment on how great the piece looks, our thanks goes to Paul for his generous donation.”

Paul Wilson said:

“The idea for the artwork came about as a result of a conversation I had with George’s sister Barbara a number of years ago.

“The images portrays George in his prime…with the world at his feet.”

Sammy Douglas MLA said:

“I’m delighted that this wonderful portrait by Paul Wilson, one of Northern Ireland’s top artists, now adorns George Best Belfast City Airport.

“It is a fitting tribute to one of Northern Ireland’s favourite sons.

“Already, images have been posted on social media of the portrait, which has been received with enthusiasm by passengers passing through the airport”.
