Having welcomed over 2.7 million visitors from over 145 countries, being named Europe’s best visitor attraction for groups, beating the Eiffel Tour and London Eye, being listed in Lonely Planet’s Ultimate Travelist of the world’s most striking locations, home is still where the heart is for Titanic Belfast. In honour of this, it offered Northern Ireland residents 3,000 complimentary tickets on 24th January 2016, which sold out overnight.
Over 3,000 NI Citizens, who got the ‘Golden Tickets’ will be able to beat the January blues and experience the world’s largest Titanic visitor attraction, which tells the story of the Titanic, from her conception in Belfast in the early 1900s, through her construction and launch, to her famous maiden voyage and tragic end, as well as view its three newly refreshed galleries.
Visitors are expected to travel from New Lodge to Newry, Castlereagh, Castlederg, Bangor and Ballymena and further afield to experience the world-class exhibition, which has been described by the Prime Minister as ‘absolutely brilliant’ and ‘magnificent and dramatic’ by TITANIC movie director, James Cameron.
Tim Husbands MBE, Chief Executive of Titanic Belfast, commented, “Although the Titanic lies in 13,000 feet of water, the enduring story still captures minds and hearts throughout the world, Titanic Belfast is living proof of this. In the last three and half years, over 2.7 million visitors from over 145 countries have discovered the story here at Titanic Belfast, the home of the Titanic and we are proud that this magic is still alive for locals as proven by the popularity of NI Citizens’ Day! For us, home is where the heart is and we look forward to welcoming our golden ticket holders!”
Since opening, Titanic Belfast has added new artefacts including the last letter ever to be written on board the Titanic by Essex-born Esther Hart and her seven-year-old daughter Eva, a note from the Titanic assistant ship’s surgeon Dr John Simpson as well as the historic plan, commissioned by the Board of Trade for the British inquiry. It also recently undertook one of the most ambitious projects since opening, a refresh of its Launch Day and Maiden Voyage galleries.
