2026 Emerges as a Landmark Year for Culture and Tourism for the City and Region

As 2026 unfolds, Belfast is preparing for a dynamic cultural renaissance, significant new developments, and a wealth of compelling reasons to explore the city and region. With an impressive line-up of large-scale events and substantial investments in hospitality, retail, and visitor experiences, Belfast has transformed into a premier destination for those seeking enriching urban getaways.

The city is gearing up for one of its most significant years yet, seamlessly blending large-scale events with fresh investments across hospitality, retail, and visitor experiences. The outcome is a more enticing and higher-value city break that offers affordable luxury. The Belfast & City Region is easy to reach, explore, and perfectly positioned to welcome the anticipated influx of visitors eager to experience its warm hospitality and historic, world class attractions.

A pivotal highlight of the year is Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the world’s largest celebration of Irish music and culture, set to take place for the first time in Belfast from 2nd to 9th August 2026. With an estimated 800,000 visits expected throughout the week, the Fleadh will infuse exceptional energy into the city, creating an open-air festival atmosphere that solidifies Belfast’s status as a UNESCO City of Music and must-visit destination for those looking to immerse themselves in Irish culture.

Gavin McKenna, Head of Marketing, Digital & Communications at Visit Belfast, emphasised, “Belfast is thriving, and 2026 will mark a transformative year for the city. The Fleadh will be a defining moment, but it is part of a broader narrative of confidence and investment that is enhancing Belfasts visitor experience. With new hotels, high-profile retail, standout exhibitions, and a packed programme of live events, the city is offering visitors even more reasons to come and stay.”

Another significant investment in our tourism economy is the further development and major expansion of the Galgorm Collection. Victoria Brown, Director of Marketing, said: “The continued growth and expansion of Galgorm Collection reflects the strong momentum we’re seeing across the visitor economy. The robust, ambitious plans for 2026 for both Galgorm Collection and Belfast, including new developments and experiences, are a clear signal of confidence in both the city and the surrounding areas. As visitors increasingly seek high-quality accommodation, exceptional food and distinctive cultural experiences, Belfast and its nearby destinations are ideally positioned to meet that demand and attract a diverse mix of city and regional travellers.”

Belfast’s proposition for 2026 extends across all visitor experiences. The city continues to enrich its appeal with high-profile shops and boutique stores, such as the Victorian Queens Arcade; a fashionable promenade providing a unique shopping experience and home to the only Rolex, TAG Heuer and Montblanc boutiques in Ireland.

Titanic Belfast’s new exhibition, “Women of Titanic: Survival, Influence & Legacy,” celebrates the remarkable women aboard the RMS Titanic. This exhibition highlights personal narratives and features a rare lifejacket worn by survivor Laura Mabel Francatelli, personal secretary to fashion designer Lady Lucy Duff Gordon, offering a unique opportunity to explore the personal and social impacts of these women in the city where the Titanic was built.

Additionally, the “Ashes to Fashion” exhibition at the Ulster Museum marks 50 years since the devastating 1976 Malone House fire, telling the story of a collection rebuilt from near-total loss. Showcasing fashion from the eighteenth century to the present day, the exhibition features rarely seen pieces from internationally renowned designers such as Alexander McQueen and Carolina Herrera, alongside Irish icons including JW Anderson and Paul Costelloe.

Complementing these new openings, Belfast’s 2026 calendar will feature major concerts and festivals across the city’s renowned venues and open-air spaces, further enhancing its appeal for short-break travel. The city’s vibrant food, drink, and cultural scene remains a key driver of repeat visits, with local experiences, locally sourced menus, standout bars, theatres, and live music creating a comprehensive range of activity to ensure there is something for everyone.

Fiona Cunningham, Tourism Northern Ireland Market Manager ROI, remarked: “Recently released statistics show that overnight trips by visitors from the south to the north increased by 15% in 2025, and we hope to see this grow again in 2026. With Belfast thriving and investing in new experiences and events to strengthen its year-round offer, and with strong connectivity, including regular direct rail links from Dublin, the city is well placed to attract more visitors from across the Republic in 2026.”

As Belfast gears up for this landmark year, visitors are invited  to immerse themselves in our rich culture, vibrant events, and warm hospitality. With a diverse array of experiences awaiting, 2026 promises to be an unforgettable year.
