To commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, North Down Museum will host a programme of events that will honour the legacy of this historic day and those who lived through it. Taking place at the museum, the celebrations will include a fascinating talk, an engaging exhibition, and a living history experience suitable for all ages.
Defence heritage expert Dr James O’Neill will present a compelling talk on the vital contribution of the Air Raid Precautions (ARP) during the Second World War. As the threat of aerial attack loomed large, the ARP were tasked with keeping civilians safe at home—distributing gas masks, enforcing blackouts, and responding to bomb raids. Dr O’Neill will explore the challenges they faced, how they were perceived by the public, and the enduring traces of their efforts that remain today. The talk will take place on Thursday 8 May at 7pm. Advanced booking is required, tickets cost £2 including refreshments.
On Sunday 11 May, visitors will have the chance to meet wartime characters brought to life by Valhalla Street Theatre, who will be roaming the museum throughout the day from 12noon – 4pm. This interactive experience invites children and adults alike to engage with life on the home front and discover the everyday realities of wartime Britain. The event will culminate with a sing-along finale in the museum’s courtyard at 3.15pm – a perfect end to a day of remembrance, learning, and celebration. Families can also enjoy a range of themed activities in the Little Historians Gallery, while relaxing with refreshments from Coffee Cure. Admission to the event is free.
The museum’s VE Day exhibition VE Day Recollections will shine a spotlight on local memories and celebrations from VE Day in 1945 and the anniversaries that followed across Ards and North Down. With photographs, stories, and personal mementoes, this exhibit brings the spirit of the day to life and honours the joy and relief that marked the end of the war in Europe. The exhibition can be viewed in the museum’s Community Gallery from 7 May – 3 August.
Speaking about the programme, The Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Alistair Cathcart said: “I’m pleased to see North Down Museum marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day with such a rich and engaging programme. It is an important opportunity to remember the sacrifices made during the Second World War and to celebrate the strength and community spirit that brought people through it. I’d encourage everyone to take part in these events, explore our local history, and join in this special commemoration.”
